Fertility Testing: What You Need To Know

Our experience has taught us that most lab tests are not truly necessary for solving the infertility mystery for most women and even for most men. In fact, new-look preliminary research that was published in 2017 has found the same conclusion. They looked at fertility markers such as FSH, AMH and inhibin b and they found that these markers were not as telling of overall fertility as was once thought. We also see this for men with poor semen analysis. We have seen many couples who still get pregnant despite the odds that they were given by their doctors.

What are the reasons that these lab results may not be as valuable as we thought. Well, there are several of them. Mostly, because a lab test that was looking at your blood is really only a snapshot it’s what’s happening just at that one day. The hormones that are involved in developing a healthy follicle and the healthy egg relying on a whole cascade of hormones begins in the brain, the adrenal glands are involved the livers involved the ovaries of course and the uterus and this is only as far as we know so far. Anything that interferes with this pathway whether that stress, metabolic issues, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, toxin exposures any one of these things can interfere with that cascade for both women and men.

The one thing that we do often recommend for women who’ve been trying to conceive for a year and haven’t been able to get pregnant, is to have imaging done this will be a benefit just to eliminate any potential physical blockages or growths or potential structural abnormalities that may be the cause of the infertility. So, to sum up this rather long answer to this question rather than spending a lot of time on labs in the beginning. We recommend that couples consult with somebody who’s experienced in fertility. So, they can get a personalized assessment and help determining exactly which lab tests might be the most beneficial for them. This will help them to get to their end result faster and always keep in mind what’s the best path to get to that result which is a healthy baby.
